Which one should you pick?
Choose Cursor Pro if…
Pick Cursor if you want an AI-first editor rather than a plugin, and you will use its agent and composer daily. When fast requests run out it falls back to slower ones instead of cutting you off, and cancelling drops you to the free Hobby tier with the editor intact.
Choose GitHub Copilot if…
Pick GitHub Copilot if you are happy in your current editor, want the lower price, or qualify for the free student or open-source plan. If your employer assigns your seat, only your organization admin can cancel it.

Price history, both services
June 2026 · GitHub Copilot
Integrated GitHub AI Credits and model-switching options across Copilot plans.
June 2024 · Cursor Pro
Introduced annual billing discount ($16/mo billed $192/yr) and expanded fast request pools.
How to run both without paying for both
Check Copilot's free eligibility first; it removes the decision for a lot of people. If you pay, run Cursor's 14-day trial against a month of Copilot on the same project, keep one, and pay annually only after three months of real use.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, Cursor Pro or GitHub Copilot?
GitHub Copilot. Its cheapest standard plan works out to $8.33 a month ($100 a year) versus $16 a month ($192 a year) for Cursor Pro, a difference of $92 a year. Bundles, promotions, and app-store billing can change the final price.
Is Cursor worth twice the price of Copilot?
Only if you use its agentic features every day. Cursor Pro is $20 a month ($192 a year) versus $10 ($100 a year) for Copilot Individual, so the extra $92 a year needs to buy time you would otherwise spend.
Can I get Cursor or Copilot for free?
Copilot is free for verified students, teachers and maintainers of popular open-source repositories. Cursor has a free Hobby tier with limited AI usage and a 14-day Pro trial.
